Congressional Outreach: Focus on HR 676

As the Obama administration and 111th Congress open, options for health care reform are receiving increased attention, and the for-profit health insurance industry is promising to reform the very mess it created. Readers of PNHP’s blog and Don McCanne’s “Quote of the Day” are well aware that policy makers and the public are targets of a barrage of misinformation that attempts to ignore or discredit the single payer approach.

Single payer national health insurance will receive consideration only if we and our allies vigorously promote its merits. PNHP has called for a national campaign to focus national attention on H.R. 676, Rep. John Conyers’ single payer bill.

CaPA is organizing delegations to meet with our 34 Democratic congressional representatives in California as soon as possible. Goals of the Congressional Outreach campaign include:

• persuading the 15 CA nonsponsors to become co-sponsors of H.R. 676
• thanking the 17 co-sponsors for their support and discussing strategy for passage of H.R. 676
• learning if Reps. Stark and Waxman might renew their former sponsorship
• encouraging all CaPA members to participate in the new era that is emerging in Washington
