Get Involved in the California Single-Payer Movement

PRINT PAGE
EN ESPAÑOL

Dear CaPA Members and Friends,

Have you wished you could find the time to get involved in promoting single payer health care reform? The opportunity is here now.

On noon on Tuesday, February 27, Senator Sheila Kuehl will be holding a press conference in Room 1190 at the state Capitol in Sacramento to announce the reintroduction of SB 840. The media event will be followed by an Assembly Health Committee hearing on SB 840 at 1:30 in Room 4202.

This renewed attention to single payer in California is our chance to use our influence to promote this bill. We’ve designed a menu of activities that you can fit into your time availability. Some of these are quick and easy (and invaluable!), while others may involve more of a commitment. What follows are some of the possibilities, arranged roughly from least to most time-consuming. Consider taking a minute or more to…

  • Write a letter to a legislator urging support of single payer (SP)
  • Ask a colleague to write a letter supporting SP
  • Try to recruit one new CaPA member
  • Send information about SP to the president of your subspecialty organization
  • Talk to a colleague and elicit their questions and concerns about SP
  • Obtain a written endorsement of SP from an organization, business, etc.
  • Identify groups, organizations, hospitals, etc. that might be interested in a speaker (to be supplied by CaPA)
  • Attend a speaker training program
  • Give a talk about SP to a group of colleagues (house party, hospital lunch, continuing education program, etc.)

Note: there is a 22 minute DVD about single payer that was created explicitly for the purpose of public presentations. That DVD is available from CaPA and on YouTube.

If you can, please join us for the events in Sacramento on February 27 and help us make a strong statement of support for SB 840. We look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

California Physicians Alliance
